The core of cleaning mold spots on women's leather bags is to first sterilize and remove mold, then clean the residue, and finally maintain the leather. Common pre-steps (must be done for all materials)
First move the bag to a ventilated and dry place, gently shake off the floating dust on the surface, and use a soft brush (wool brush, makeup brush) to brush off the hyphae on the surface of the mold (be careful not to rub hard to prevent the spread of mold spores).
Do a local test first: apply the prepared cleaning materials on inconspicuous places such as the inside and bottom of the bag to make sure it will not fade or damage the leather before dealing with the mildew spots.
Cleaning methods by material
1. Smooth leather (cowhide, sheepskin smooth model)
This type of leather is relatively durable and less difficult to treat mildew spots.
Mild mildew (a few black spots, no odor):
Dip a cotton swab into 75% medical alcohol and gently wipe the mold spots. The alcohol can sterilize and remove mold. After wiping, wipe it dry with a clean dry cloth and place it in a ventilated place to dry completely.
Severe mold spots (large areas of mildew spots and musty smell):
Dip a soft cloth into diluted neutral detergent (mix dish soap and warm water at a ratio of 1:10) and gently wipe the mildew spots; after wiping, wipe off the remaining detergent with a damp cloth, then use a dry cloth to absorb the water, and ventilate to dry.
After drying: Apply a thin layer of leather care oil/hand cream to nourish the leather and prevent drying.
2. Suede/suede (with velvet on the surface)
This kind of material is afraid of water and chemicals, so it needs to be handled with extra gentleness.
Mild mildew:
Use the rubber side of a special suede brush and brush gently in the direction of the pile to remove the mildew spots; you can also use a clean eraser to gently wipe away the mildew spots (like erasing pencil writing).
Moderate mildew:
Use a cotton swab dipped in a small amount of white vinegar (white vinegar has the effect of sterilizing and removing mildew), gently wipe the mold spots, and then immediately dry it with a dry cloth and place it in a ventilated place to dry; after drying, use a suede brush to comb the fluff to restore the texture.
Taboo: Never touch a large area with water, otherwise it will leave water marks and make the leather hard.
3. Artificial leather (PU, PVC leather)
This type of material is more corrosion-resistant than genuine leather and is easier to clean.
Use a soft cloth dipped in diluted soapy water (neutral laundry detergent + warm water) and gently wipe the mildew spots until the mildew spots disappear;
Wipe off the foam residue with a clean wet cloth, dry it with a dry cloth, and place it in a ventilated place to dry;
After drying, you can apply a layer of special care agent for artificial leather to extend its service life.
4. Canvas / nylon bag
This type of material can be washed directly with water and has the best mold removal effect.
Put the bag into the basin, use a soft-bristled brush dipped in neutral laundry detergent, and gently scrub the mold spots;
Rinse it with clean water, do not wring it out hard (to prevent deformation), and place it directly in a ventilated place to dry in the shade;
Taboo: Do not expose it to the sun, otherwise it will fade and accelerate the aging of the material.
Important notes
For bags that are severely moldy (mildew spots penetrate the interior of the leather, have a strong musty smell, and the leather has become soft and rotten), it is recommended to send it to a professional leather care store for treatment. Cleaning it yourself can easily cause complete damage.
After cleaning, desiccant should be put into the bag when stored, and placed in a dry and ventilated cabinet to avoid molding again.
Never use strong corrosive cleaners such as bleach and disinfectant, as these will cause the leather to discolor, harden, and crack.
